68. Explaining the political left and the political right

Why is politics so short-term oriented and emotionally driven? To listen to some people, all of the problems of the world had to do with women. I did not buy that premise as convenient as it might sound. Our entire intellectual and political life is one fad after the other, one person to blame after the other; where are the grand theories, the grand visions for the future? It is pathetic how in a country especially like the United States you have a nation of salesmen; nowhere is there a single intellectual to be found. Even those who are paid to work as intellectuals or in academia are just tools of those who pay them; everyone has an agenda. There is no concrete effort to build a lasting model of the world. Many so-called intellectuals are scared to build a real understanding of the world; if, for example, racism were to become justified, they just don't want to go in that direction. Most intellectuals are not driven by an unfailing devotion to truth, where ever it leads; they are committed to other lesser ideas, like perpetuating capitalism, or their status at the top of society. Most intellectuals are ideologues.
